Sapa — the hill-station town in the Hoàng Liên Sơn range at 1,500m elevation — is one of Northern Vietnam's unmissable stops. Getting there used to take 10 hours on mountain roads; since the CT05 Nội Bài–Lào Cai expressway opened fully, the drive is now a smooth 6 hours door-to-door, with only the last 30 km being actual switchbacks.
Most visitors spend 2 nights in Sapa. The town itself is small (walkable in 30 minutes) but the surrounding trekking — Cat Cat, Ta Phin, Lao Chai, Ta Van villages — fills two full days. Fansipan, Indochina's highest peak at 3,143m, is 15 minutes from the town center by cable car.
Renting a car Hanoi → Sapa makes sense for four groups: families with young children (sleeper buses are cramped), photographers with heavy gear, travelers with mobility issues (overnight trains require multiple transfers), and groups of 3+ where the car price is less than 3 bus tickets. Overnight trains (Chapa Express, Violette) are still a romantic option, but they drop you at Lào Cai station at 5 AM, requiring a further 35-minute transfer up the mountain.
Recommended itinerary
Suggested driving itinerary (one-way, 6 hours):
- 0:00 — Hanoi Old Quarter departure. Allow 40 minutes to clear the city and reach CT05 Thăng Long Avenue on-ramp.
- 1:30 — Phú Thọ service area. Quick coffee / restroom break. Clean facilities, Vietnamese and Western food.
- 3:30 — Yên Bái service area. Fresh river-fish lunch if traveling midday. Local specialty: cá bỗng.
- 5:00 — Lào Cai exit. Expressway ends. Next 30 km is QL4D mountain road — narrower, winding, scenic. Allow 50-60 minutes for the ascent.
- 6:00 — Arrival in Sapa town center. Most hotels have free valet parking or nearby paid lots (30,000 VND/day).
For first-time visitors we recommend arriving by 3 PM to enjoy the afternoon Cat Cat village walk before dinner. Departure from Hanoi by 8 AM typically works.
